COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Brevet de voile croisière élémentaire is part of the Quebec Sailing Federation curriculum and is recognized by the Canadian Sailing Federation. At the end of this course, you will be able to sail safely, as a skipper or competent crew member, on a 6 to 10-meter sailboat equipped with an inboard or outboard motor, in familiar waters, by day, in moderate wind and sea conditions.

Obtention du Brevet Élémentaire:

Competent board leader or crew member

Throughout your course, your instructor will evaluate your practical performance on various maneuvers and objectives governed by the Quebec Sailing Federation. Depending on your level of competence, you may be awarded the title of Skipper, authorizing you to steer a sailboat with a crew, or the title of Competent Crewman, allowing you to participate in maneuvers as a crew member. Please note that these certificates are only awarded on condition that the candidate registers for a theory exam (not included in the course) and obtains a mark of over 70% on the exam. For a detailed description of Voile Canada’s Brevet élémentaire and its objectives, please click here.

Sailing area

Lac des Deux-Montagnes is considered an exceptional place to learn to sail. Its vast expanse of water offers a safe and relatively uncrowded environment, allowing beginners to sail in complete safety, while benefiting from variable wind conditions for an enriching learning experience.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOOKING

STEP 1: Book your practical course

The course takes place aboard a 26-foot Tanzer called Azimut, the ideal boat for an introduction to sailing, and lasts 4 days (consecutive or not). Students can book their course in two formats: as a cohort, over the weeks pre-established in our calendar, from Monday to Thursday, or as a semi-private group spread over four days during the summer, depending on availability. During these sessions, your instructor will accompany you and enable you to put into practice, in collaboration with the other students, all the skills required to obtain the Canadian Sailing Federation’s Brevet Élémentaire.

STEP 2: Sign the online risk acceptance form

Thank you for reviewing the risks associated with your activity and signing the online risk acceptance to make your on-site experience as pleasant and hassle-free as possible.

STEP 3: Book your theory exam

The Brevets élémentaires de voile croisière are issued exclusively by the Fédération de voile du Québec after candidates have passed the course theory exam with a passing grade of 70% or more. Theoretical exams last a maximum of 2 hours and are based on the content of the book “Initiation à la voile croisière”. Exam sessions are available every Saturday morning from June 1 to August 31 inclusive. From September 1, theory exams are only available on weekday mornings, Monday to Friday, by telephone reservation.

OPTIONAL: Book additional improvement sessions

The Brevet élémentaire de voile croisière is given over a minimum of 28 hours of instruction. Although participants can pass their practical certification during the 4 days of scheduled instruction, additional refresher sessions are often required to fully assimilate the theory and maneuvers evaluated during the practical exam. These sessions are available by the day and can be taken throughout the summer, subject to posted availability. It is also possible to book additional sessions to retake the practical test. To book, simply select one or more days of additional lessons (depending on the candidate’s needs) from the availabilities on offer.

LAST STEP BEFORE BOARDING: Reading the “Introduction à la voile croisière” book

We strongly recommend that you read Voile Canada’s book “Initiation à la croisière” before starting your course. The explanations given during the practical course and the topics covered in the theory exam for the elementary certificate are based on this book.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your course. We’ll be happy to assist you.

See you on the water!
