COURSE DESCRIPTION
The CanSail (VoileCAN) program is Sail Canada’s national dinghy training program and comprises six distinct levels. CanSail levels 1 and 2 (VoileCAN 1 and VoileCAN 2) introduce students to essential sailing skills. Skills include nomenclature, wind theory, rigging, sail and boat trimming, as well as safety techniques such as man-overboard recovery and righting after capsizing. By the end of the course, students will have acquired the skills needed to sail single-handed and perform basic maneuvers in a controlled manner.
This course is recommended for those wishing to progress in the sport of dinghy sailing and take part in friendly and/or competitive regattas. Please note that our club organizes friendly regattas every Wednesday during the summer season, open to all levels. No previous sailing experience is required to enroll in this course.
CanSail 1 & 2 certification
Students in the cohort will be supervised and coached throughout the week by their instructor. In order to obtain their CanSail 1 or CanSail 2 certification, students will need to demonstrate each skill to the standards set by Sail Canada on a consistent basis for each level.
Sailing area
Lac des Deux-Montagnes is considered an exceptional place to learn to sail. Its vast expanse of water offers a safe and relatively uncrowded environment, allowing beginners to sail in complete safety, while benefiting from variable wind conditions for an enriching learning experience.
Important information
Courses are given in French, in groups of a maximum of five students, and take place over a period of five consecutive days, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to learn to sail both beach and sport catamarans.
Classes take place rain or shine. We recommend that you bring a raincoat and a change of clothes in case of rain. Wetsuits can be provided on request. Bring your own water shoes if you have them.
Although the course is open to all, it’s important to note that light sailing (on dinghies and catamarans) is a sport requiring a minimum level of physical fitness. Among other things, you’ll need to pass regularly under the boom to carry out maneuvers and to remain seated on the boat for extended periods.
A one-hour lunch break is usually taken between 12:30 and 1:30 pm. Refrigerators are available, and you can eat on one of our waterfront terraces.
At the end of the season, the list of candidates who have successfully completed their CanSail Certification will be forwarded to the Quebec Sailing Federation, which will issue the certificates.
